WHAT ARE COOKIES?
Cookies are files that can be downloaded to your device through web pages. They are tools that play an essential role in the provision of numerous information society services. Among others, they allow a website to store and retrieve information about the browsing habits of a user or their equipment and, depending on the information obtained, can be used to recognize the user and improve the service offered.
TYPES OF COOKIES
Depending on which organisation manages the domain from which the cookies are sent and processes the data obtained, two types can be distinguished:
- First-party cookiesthose sent to the user's terminal equipment from a computer or domain managed by the editor itself and from which the service requested by the user is provided.
- Third-party cookies: those sent to the user’s device from a computer or domain that is not managed by the publisher, but by another entity that processes the data obtained through the cookies. Where cookies are installed from a computer or domain managed by the publisher itself, but the information collected through them is managed by a third party, they cannot be considered first-party cookies.
There is also a second classification based on the length of time they remain stored in the user’s browser, and these may be:
- Session cookies: designed to collect and store data whilst the user is accessing a web page. They are usually used to store information that needs to be retained solely for the purpose of providing the service requested by the user on a one-off basis (e.g. a list of purchased items).
- Persistent cookies: the data remains stored on the device and can be accessed and processed for a period determined by the party responsible for the cookie, which may range from a few minutes to several years.
Finally, there is another classification into five types of cookies, based on the purpose for which the data collected is processed:
- Technical cookies: those that enable the user to navigate a website, platform or application and to use the various options or services available on it, such as controlling data traffic and communication, identifying the session, accessing restricted-access areas, remember the items included in an order, complete the purchase process for an order, submit a registration or participation request for an event, use security features whilst browsing, store content for the streaming of videos or audio, or share content via social media.
- Personalisation cookies: these allow the user to access the service with certain predefined general settings based on a range of criteria relating to the user’s device, such as the language, the type of browser used to access the service, the regional settings of the location from which the service is accessed, etc.
- Analytics cookies: these enable the party responsible for them to monitor and analyse the behaviour of users of the websites to which they are linked. The information collected through this type of cookie is used to measure activity on websites, applications or platforms and to create browsing profiles of users of those sites, applications and platforms, with a view to making improvements based on the analysis of how users utilise the service.
- Advertising cookies:allow the management, in the most effective way possible, of advertising spaces.
- Behavioral advertising cookiesstore information on the behavior of users obtained through the continuous observation of their browsing habits, which allows the development of a specific profile to show advertising based on it.
- External social network cookiesused so that visitors can interact with the content of different social platforms (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.) and are generated only for users of said social networks. The conditions for using these cookies and the information collected are regulated by the privacy policy of the corresponding social platform.
